Stock certificate collection, 1840-1960.

Chiefly stock certificates, collected by Arata, from mid-19th century through mid-20th century. Also includes supplemental materials provided by the collector/donor which have been kept with the related stock certificate wherever possible. The vast majority of the companies represented were incorporated in the state of Maine, though their interests were global. Also included are a couple of notable autographs as well as an agreement of the Maine Central Railroad to provide a railroad spur in the town of Standish, Me.

In 1845 the Androscoggin & Kennebec Railroad was chartered to build a line from Danville Junction on the Atlantic & St. Lawrence (Grand Trunk) to Waterville, and the Penobscot & Kennebec Railroad was chartered to extend the Androscoggin & Kennebec line to Bangor. The former line was completed to Waterville in 1849, and the first train entered Bangor over the latter road in August, 1855.
